Our Camp!

Who’s Camp? OUR CAMP!!

At Abundant Beginnings we provide Social Justice infused camps that center child directed free play as a lived experience of liberation and freedom. We practice respect by allowing children the opportunity to choose their activities and by using non-violent communication. We encourage awareness by bringing in a social justice topic to discuss each week. We build compassion by bringing emotional literacy into our problem-solving conversations. We normalize diversity among both campers and counselors across race, age, abilities, and gender. We learn to play inclusively, even when it's unusual or awkward. Fundamentally, we believe that when the adults at Abundant Beginnings are guided by principles of justice and respect, then justice and respect become the guiding principles of our community.

Camp Offerings

Abundant Summers

We create a camp experience that gives children a chance to explore nature, learn through play  and just be kids. With a curriculum that is grounded in ecofeminist pedagogy* we are focused on the practice of social justice and diversity. Abundant Summers’ campers shape their camp da; snack and mealtimes provide rhythm while between gathering times children choose whether to participate in a structured activity like altar making,  fishing, direct action planning, or kickball or choose to use the unstructured time to build, climb, read, or make art.

School Break Camp

Camp Freedom

So,  you have been coming to Abundant Beginnings for a while, you are beginning to understand what the Cis-White-Hetero-Patriarchy is and how to resist it, and you also know that with great freedom comes great responsibility. Now it's time for you to practice how you will you live the Afrofuturist dream of true self determination: being carefree Black kids. As the designers of your destiny you must create the community you want to be in. Where will we go? What will we do? How will we make decisions? We will equip you and 11 other campers with a budget, a bus and a few adult allies to drive and make sure no one gets hurt. The rules - I’m not willing to get arrested & no screens.

So... you in?

FUTURE FACILITATORS

Part of the mission of Abundant Beginnings is helping to prepare future leaders. The Future Facilitator program is for kids of color, ages 12 to 16, who are ready to step out of the role of camper and into leadership. This opportunity comes with a stipend and can go on future resumes & college applications. The duties of the Future Facilitators are similar to those of a Liberation Leader (counselor in training): they help the campers with activities and help other Facilitators in gathering all the children together. Most importantly, their role is to be a model of how a good community member manages themselves, treats others and contributes to the world around them. Youth will have positive examples of adulthood and be able to continue to play, learn, and enjoy their late childhood & adolescence. We are excited to help our Future Facilitators in taking on leadership roles, to guide them as they take on responsibility for a project they are interested in, teach the campers how to play a game they love, and further their knowledge on how to peacefully help in a time of conflict.

Ages 12-16

Cost: Free, Small stipend for youth available
